The morphology of the psoas major, specifically at the L3/4 intervertebral disc level, was examined using three metrics: (i) the psoas muscle mass index (PMI); (ii) the mean muscle attenuation (in Hounsfield units, HU); and (iii) the mean ratio of the short-axis to long-axis length of the bilateral psoas major to determine morphologic changes.
A substantial difference (p=0.0001) in PMI was observed between men and women, specifically with men having higher values. Patients who were severely impaired had a substantially lower PMI (p=0.0002) and muscle attenuation (p=0.0001), a statistically significant finding. A statistically significant increase in both PMI and muscle attenuation was seen in individuals with no or mild back pain (both p<0.0001). HU values, in both univariate and multivariate analyses, were positively correlated with enhanced functional capacity, as gauged by ODI scores (p=0.0002). To mitigate the scarcity of understory plants and the decline in biodiversity, which are consequences of the high tree density in Robinia pseudoacacia plantations on the Loess Plateau in northwestern China, our analysis integrated both field survey data and published research. To determine the influence of canopy density on understory plant biodiversity, the upper boundary line method was carefully considered and implemented. A study conducted at the Guanshan Forest Farm of Jingchuan County in Gansu Province showed that the number of understory plant species was significantly greater in Robinia pseudoacacia plantations than in natural grassland. Specifically, there were 91 species in the plantations and 78 in the grassland. A significant divergence in the dominant species emerged according to canopy density levels, uniquely distinct from the natural grassland scenario. Integrating data from diverse sources, both literary and field-based, revealed that, with a mean annual precipitation (MAP) of 550 mm, increasing canopy density initially promoted a stable understory plant population, then later experienced either a significant or a slight decrease; this was mirrored in the understory plant biomass which demonstrated either a sharp and continuous reduction or a slight and temporary increase before a final decline.
